– What is the impact of Chinese urban models on Addis Ababa?

On Monday 1 July 2pm, Go West Project organizes a brainstorm titled ‘The China Model’. Writer Michiel Hulshof and architect Daan Roggeveen, founders of Go West Project, will lead the brainstorm.

Goal of the brainstorm is to get a deeper insight into the impact of Chinese urban models on the city of Addis Ababa, especially the building of the African Union and the Eastern Industrial Zone.

BACKGROUND
Go West Project is a multidisciplinary research and design studio focusing on the development of emerging megacities. Over the past years Go West researched emerging cities in western China, resulting in the book How the City Moved to Mr Sun – China’s New Megacities (2011).

Their current research project focuses on China’s involvement in African urbanization. Following the increased influence of China in other parts of the world, China is exporting parts of its urban model to Africa: new Special Economic Zones in Zambia, Nigeria and Ethiopia, Chinese residential models in Angola or Kenya and Chinese roads, airports and railways all over Africa. Moreover, there is also a ‘soft power’ approach with Chinese Africa-based media, Chinese language schools, university grants for Africans, and Chinese medical aid projects in Africa. Go West thinks this phenomenon deserves an unprejudiced look as to what this means for the development and the future of African cities.
The brainstorm will be held at the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Addis Ababa.

I am so sick of the “oh, but it’s actually making fun of it” defense. Bullshit. You can’t make fun of a thing by simply doing a thing, and just because you say soi;mhtng&#8217es a joke doesn’t make it less pernicious. I feel sick to my stomach when I ponder what some these people must think of women and girls, to think pretending to prey on them and rape them is funny.
